I don't like to tell anyone about "hidden gems" I find in the city because, well, then they wouldn't be hidden. But I had been looking all over Chicago for a quality, reasonably priced haircut and finally found the last barbership I'll ever need in the Civic Opera Barber Salon. The barbershop has everything I need to make me feel comfortable. Sam was my barber and did an absolutely fantastic job. For some perspective, I've spent $125 for a haircut in the Loop, very recently. It was a great cut, but not some where I could rationalize going for every cut. The cut I got from Sam was the same, if not better quality for much, much less. I am very picky when it comes to haircuts and Sam met all my needs. I'm thrilled that I found a new barber and can't wait to get a haircut again.

I just moved back from NYC, and i have been looking for a good barber in Chicago. This is hands down the best barbershoop I have been to, NYC included. Sam gets you, period - he is very focused on every detail of the haircut. One of the best thing about this place is that all cut comes standard with a razor finish for your neck and ears area for free - you don't even have to ask for it!

I have been going to great clips since moving to the city. A friend told me about Sam. I went and had the best hair cut I have had since moving to the city today. He takes great pride in his work and gave me by far the best hair cut I have had. I would highly recomend him to anyone looking for a great haircut!

Trufitt and Hill used to be goto spot for a great haircut and shave, unfortunately Trufitt closed. A colleague referred me to his longtime barber, Leo, at the Civic Opera Barber Salon. So I decided to give them a shot and I made an appointment. As soon as I walked in, I felt like i went back in time. Seriously, like I was in a episode of Madmen or something, it was a complete throwback. Not only was my haircut "spectacular" (that's how my wife described it), but It was half the price I used to pay at Trufitt. If your looking for a great haircut with no BS, this is the spot.

"This place is great. I am in my 20s and really like the old-school feel. They are quick, accomodating and good to talk with. Also, I like the TV that you can watch and catch up on the news."

"Sam and the crew do a wonderful job. Truly keeping the standards high. Worth the trip, and coming back!"

"This is your father's, or maybe your grandfather's barber shop. No frills, no froo-froo, no 'product' or 'stylists' -- just old-school barbers who've been cutting hair for decades. It's best to call ahead and make an appointment and if you're interested you can also get a hot shave and shoe shine if you want to look your best for a big meeting and hot date. Cuts are about $25 and they are cash only. Don't forget the tip. Ask for Leo."

"I like this manly refuge. It's where the pros work. You know the pros, right? The Italian guys who've been cutting hair since before your daddy was born. Anyone can walk into a Hair Cuttery, but why not try something different? Step into their office; you won't be disappointed."

"Sam and the boys at Civic Opera Barber really do it right. Do you like your hair cut right? Do you like your shoes shined? Do you like a hot shave now and again? Do you want to feel like part of the rat pack, then come see the REAL barbers at Civic Opera. It is a wonderful place with great staff, good conversation and an excellent cut. Sam always takes great care of me, from a good cut to the bi-weekly hot shave, no better way to do it! I highly recommend a visit and you will be sold. Bring your friends in for an experience and skip the Halo for Men's in the city. Stop paying for all the frilly BS and come get a cut and shave. I promise it will be worth the visit."

"I've gotten my hair cut all over downtown and the Loop. It took me a while to find this place, but Sam is the best. I walk out with a great haircut every time. Plus, can't beat the hot lather neck shave. Growing up on the South Side, I went to three different barbers, all named Johnny. This place definitely has some of that Chicago charm. Highly recommended."
